A conspicuous museum building (architect: Heinz Tesar) on the edge of the Danube water meadows in Klosterneuburg near Vienna is home to Austria’s biggest private collection of contemporary art.

The collection of contemporary art belonging to Agnes and Karlheinz Essl has over 7,000 works and offers and incomparable insight into present-day art. The Essl collection is noted both for the married collectors' personal view of art as well as constant buying activity. Austrian painting from 1945 onwards forms the central core of the collection. Also represented are contemporary items from Europe, the USA, Australia, South America and Asia.

Collection overviews, monographic presentations, themed exhibitions, views of the collection by guest curators and the art of other cultures determine the exhibition program at the Essl Museum. The exhibition series entitled "emerging artists" and "ESSL ART AWARD CEE" present young art that is not yet established on the market.
Made in Austria - Essl Museum 2014

The Essl Museum is dedicated entirely to Austrian art in 2014. And this year's motto "made in austria", a broad spectrum of Austrian art produced since 1945 is presented in eight exhibitions.

In addition to 3,200 m² of exhibition space, the museum has a café with sun terrace, a bookshop, a studio offering art classes and a library.
