Church of Our Lady of The Snow (Praga)
Praga . Prague Region . República Checa

The monumental church is situated in Jungmann Square in the New Town, very close to the Wenceslas Square. It was founded by Charles IV in the 14th century.

The church of Our Lady of the Snow was founded by Charles IV in on 3rd September 1347, one day after the king’s coronation. The original idea was to built a church that would be 100 m long and 40 m high, something that would outshine the St Vitus Cathedral, however the only part that was completed according to the plans was the presbytery.

During the Hussite wars the church was, as well as many others, badly damaged and for almost a hundred years it was left to decay. At the beginning of the 17th century it was the new owners of the church - the Franciscans - who had the damaged Gothic dome replaced by the Renaissance one. Later it was restored again in the Baroque style though the Gothic walls remained almost untouched.

The altar is one of the highest altars in Prague (29 m), it was carved between 1649 – 1651. The building that was meant to be a “presbytery only” now serves as the actual church. Nevertheless it is a spectacular piece or architecture and definitely worth seeing.
